Geplaatst op door Martijn van der Veen10-3-2020: Across the Channel: Brexit by the Brits Brexit has been covered thoroughly by the Dutch and European news. However, this is done from an external perspective, which leads to a lot of Europeans being aware of the facts and events, but not of the reasons leading up to them, and why these things came to be. As a result, Brexit is seen as a British quirk. This perception leads many Europeans, including Guy Verhofstadt, to assume that Britain will eventually come to regret their decision and rejoin the EU. This is an assumption that ignores the rooted Euroscepticism in Britain, and the general distrust its politicians have towards the European Union. By ignoring the cultural and political causes behind Brexit, we miss the chance of learning from this event.Across the Channel is composed of two speakers giving a 20-minute lecture each, about a particular aspect of Brexit. These lectures will be done in English, to emphasize the British perspective. We hope that at the end of the symposium, you will have a better understanding of the reasoning behind Brexit.
